Piedmont Park was first privately owned then sold off over the years only to a couple different hands. The lake itself first was a pond and then in 1895 was expanded to 11.5 acres swimming hole for the Cotton States and International Exposition that ran for 100 days. Due to pollution during the 70's it was prohibited and another swimming area was built. Then in 2004 it has been cleaned up and renovated with a new deck, wood boardwalk, and pathways around the lake.
